The main way we help young people is through our 1-2-1 Mentorship Programme. This gives you the opportunity to be paired up with a trusted adult mentor, who will offer you friendship, guidance and advice for taking those next steps to becoming your best future self. Your mentor will be carefully matched to you by our expert DAY1 team, based on your similar interests and personalities. Many of our mentors were once mentees themselves!
Once you’ve been paired with your personal mentor, you’ll be able to meet them on a weekly basis for one full year. Across those 12 months, you’ll get to choose activities to do together. These could be something active like karting, horse riding and playing sport, or just hanging out, going to the cinema, or trying a restaurant / cafe you’ve always wanted to go to. The list is endless – it’s your time, your choice.
Your mentor will also help you on your further education or career pathway as you prefer. They’ve got your best interests at heart, and you can rely on them to offer support with CV writing, college applications, interviews, setting up work experiences and everything in between.By meeting every week, you and your mentor will get to know each other really well and many of DAY1’s mentoring relationships last well beyond the initial year.
The Mentorship Programme is open to young people in S4 – S6 at our partnership secondary schools within the Scottish Highlands, and there are 30 places available each year.
If you are finding it difficult to stay focussed in school or are unsure about the next step you want to take in your future, your guidance teacher may refer you to the DAY1 Mentorship Programme, or you can ask for an introduction yourself too of course. We will then help you complete a short application and will arrange an informal chat with you to find out about what you’d like to gain from the programme. If you are interested in applying, please speak to your guidance teacher or email our DAY1 mentoring expert, Hollie Wilson to find out more.
