How is DAY1 funded?

DAY1 is funded through a mix of internal and external funding sources:

External funding

Since DAY1 was established in 2005, we have been incredibly fortunate to have received financial support from a range of trusts, businesses, funding bodies and individuals, including:

Current Sponsors

Past Sponsors

• The Robertson Trust

• The National Lottery

• Highland Council

• Strateraenergy Limited

• European Social Fund

Internal or Self-Funding

DAY1 is largely self-funded through our social enterprise business Inverness Kart Raceway (IKR). IKR was established ten years after DAY1 was founded, to enable us to become a more self-sufficient charity where all profits generated from the racetrack could be channelled back into DAY1’s services and programmes.

Each of our services are funded as follows:

1-2-1 Mentoring Programme

Currently funded by IKR and by occasional private donations. There is also the potential to add ‘traditional’ funding at any time.

Foundation Apprenticeships Programme

Funded annually by Skills Development Scotland through the national scheme administered by Scottish Funding Council.

P7 Life Skills and Personal Development Programme

Currently funded by IKR.

IKR itself was funded through a mix of grants and loans from Scottish & Southern Energy, Social Investment Scotland, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and banks. We also provide the opportunity for local businesses, organisations and sports teams to sponsor the track or buy advertising space, which further helps to fund the services we provide.

Measuring outcomes and success

Our main aim at DAY1 is to ensure that each young person who enrols on our Mentorship or Foundation Apprenticeship Programmes will be engaged in full time employment, school, training or further education at the end of the 12-month period. We measure our success against our ability to create the following outcomes and achievements for the young people that we support through our programme:

  • The young person being in employment, training or education at the end of the 12-month Mentorship or Foundation Apprenticeship Programme.
  • Increased confidence and self-belief.
  • Lasting interest and direction.
  • Improved respect for others.
  • A noticeable positive change in attitude towards school activities.

The key focus of our outcomes and the theme that runs through all our services, is to ensure that we prevent young people from falling into ‘NEET’ status (Not in Education, Employment or Training). The key word here is ‘prevent’ and we do that by intervening at key stages in the young person’s journey both within school and in their transition from it.

Consistently, our DAY1 programmes have achieved significant outcomes including:

  • 94% of DAY1 programme graduates have entered into employment, education or training at the end of the year long programme.
  • 5 years after graduating from their programme, 89% of participants are still in a positive, sustainable destination.

How do we measure this?

1-2-1 Mentoring Programme:

We monitor the number of young people who move into further education, training or employment after they have completed the programme, and use this to determine the percentage of young people who we have helped to prevent falling into NEET status. We do this by keeping track of each young person’s progress at the end of their Mentoring Programme, and for up to five years beyond.

Once they have left the project, each young person will be encouraged to make weekly contact with their Mentor for the first 6 months. Beyond this, contact between Mentors and their Mentees will be by mutual agreement. The young people are encouraged to use the DAY1 Mentoring Programme Manager as a source of support and information, with regards to exploring new sustainable employment opportunities. The Programme Manager monitors the progress of each young person for up to 5 years beyond the end of the project to keep track of their further education or employment journey.

  • Foundation Apprenticeships (FA) Programme: Quantitative outcomes are measured against each young person’s attendance, completion and SQA qualification attainment. These three outcomes are set by Skills Development Scotland and are used nationally. DAY1 works tirelessly at establishing industry sector future Modern Apprenticeship opportunities for our trainees and have established a strong and respected position with partners in this sector. With a new-found, hard wired, work ready attitude, trainees find themselves in great demand. Meaningful re-engagement in school and securing college placements are also powerful indicators of the strong outcomes being achieved by the programme.
  • P7 Life Skills and Personal Development Programme:  For children in P7, a successful outcome is whether or not they engage at school and transition successfully into a sustainable attendance at secondary school. In addition, feedback is secured from teachers and guidance staff directly.

Plans for growth

We’re a relatively small team here at DAY1, however our services are in extremely high demand. Whilst we primarily enrol young people from our partnership schools onto our programmes, we regularly receive enquiries from other statuary services right across the Scottish Highlands region. As we operate exclusively in this region, we can only take on a certain amount of young people per year to our programmes. This is to ensure that we can continue to deliver our programmes successfully whilst maintaining our exceptional standards in the safeguarding and support of every young person that comes through DAY1. However, there is evidently a need for an expansion of our services beyond the current geographic and financial boundaries that we are operating in at present.

We know that we can only support a limited amount of young people each year, when there are many others out there that are in critical need of our help. Our vision is to expand on the services that we offer at DAY1, so that we can continue to change the lives of young people in the Scottish Highlands in a positive way.

We are currently working on concrete plans to grow our offering through new skills development programmes and experiences for young people and are always looking for funders to support us on this venture. If you are a business or funding body who is interested to learn more about our growth plans, please contact corrin@day1.uk.com for more information on how you could support us.
